WHERE WE SLEEP

Antarctica has this mythic weight. It resides in the collective unconscious of so many people, and it makes this huge impact, just like outer space. It’s like going to the moon.
— John Krakauer

Ushuaia, Argentina

  • Tonight we’ll stay in Los Cauquenes or another beautiful hotel in Ushuaia. We’ll share a beautiful dinner with the rest of the folks on the journey.

Ocean Victory

  • Chose between cozy but well appointed cabins or full luxury suites. Either way you’ll have views few people on earth ever get to witness. Sunsets, whales, penguins and massive ice bergs. It’s pretty sweet to ski the most rugged terrain on earth but sleep in cozy cotton sheets and eat warm meals from professional chefs. No dehydrated backpacker meals here.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Check out the FAQ’s below, or text or call us at 845-661-3008 to talk it through! Or send us an email. We love hearing from folks.

  • On the surface, a ski trip in Antarctica is epic and gnarly and reserved only for the most experienced skiers in the world. But this trip just isn’t like that. Having a ship, zodiaks, multiple guides, and flexible schedules means we can accommodate a lot of different needs and experience-levels. That being said, you should at minimum be able to ski black diamonds at a resort in all snow conditions and have backcountry skied at least 5 - 10 days before. You don’t need previous ski mountaineering or glacier travel experience although both of these would be helpful.

    • Professional Mountain Guide with over 17 years climbing and skiing experience around the world & advanced wilderness medical training.

    • 3-nights pre-expedition shared hotel accommodation in Ushuaia, Argentina. This room includes a continental breakfast.

    • Group dinner in Ushuaia.

    • 2-day Antarctic Prep/Glacier Travel Clinic in Ushuaia.

    • Group transfers from the hotel to the ship on embarkation and from the ship to the airport on disembarkation and all miscellaneous service taxes and port charges.

    • Breakfast, lunch and dinner on board the Ocean Diamond.

    • Shore landings and Zodiac excursions as permitted by weather and local conditions.

    • Presentations by our Expedition Team and guest speakers.

    • Expedition certificate.

    • Photographic DVD chronicling the voyage.

    • Comprehensive pre-departure information package

    • Use of a pair of rubber expedition boots on loan for shore landings. These will be returned at the end of the voyage.

    • All group gear climbing gear: Ropes first aid kit, emergency communication device.

    • Airfares to or from your home city, whether on scheduled or charter flights.

    • Passport and visa expenses. Tourist entry fees may apply depending on your nationality.

    • Any government arrival and departure airport taxes.

    • Ski or trekking equipment.

    • Any meals ashore with the exception of breakfast at the host hotel and the Welcome dinner on the evening prior to departure.

    • 5-day Ushuaia Ski Tour add-on

    • Baggage, cancellation and travel insurance (emergency medical and evacuation insurance is mandatory. Ice Axe can help you to arrange this insurance if you need assistance.)

    • Excess baggage charges.

    • Laundry, bar, beverage and other personal charges onboard the ship or at the hotel.

    • Telecommunications charges or the customary gratuity at the end of the voyage for stewards, guides, and other service personnel.

    • Tips for guides and hospitality staff.

  • We limit all our trips to 8 clients. If your trip has more than 6 people you will have 2 guides. That being said we will be sharing the ship with many other guides and ski touring folks. On this adventure guides from around the world get together with their clients to share the cost of the expedition.

  • Delicious warm meals made by professional chefs. You will not go hungry.

  • We will meet in Ushuaia Argentina. The exact hotel and room info will be sent to you after booking. Most people will want to arrive a few days early to see the area and travel around. At minimum we recommend arriving the day prior to settle in and rest off some let lag. Please plan to depart Ushuaia no earlier than the day after our return. Travel in Antarctica has can be complex and we can’t always stick to an exact schedule.

  • We have people come on our trips by themselves all the time! There’s nothing like travel through remote wilderness to build community. Our prices are based on double occupancy of rooms. if you’re traveling alone we’ll ask you to pay a one time solo - travel supplement to cover the extra cost of the room. Please inquire for updated pricing.

  • Indigo Alpine Guide trips are most often run by the owner Jack Bynum and his closest and most trusted friends. All the people who work for IAG have over a decade of experience guiding trips in the most remote places on earth, have wilderness medical training and advanced guiding certifications.

  • You may cancel up to 120 days of the scheduled travel date and receive a full refund minus a $500 per-person service fee. If you cancel between 120 and 60 days of travel, there is a 50% cancellation fee. Within 60 days of travel, there is a 100% cancellation fee. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance as we are not able to make exceptions to this policy in cases of family/medical emergency or of the trip being canceled.

  • We always encourage folks to purchase trip cancelation insurance in addition to the mandatory medical evacuation insurance. We require that you have at least $200,000 in medical evacuation insurance. Your insurance policy should cover hazardous sports and we recommend that your policy cover search and rescue. Since we cannot confirm each client’s policy individually, it is your responsibility to make sure your policy will cover you while you participate in your activities of choice on the expedition.

For US citizens, we recommend the Travelex Travel Select Insurance with the Adventurer Pak upgrade. You will have a choice of purchasing it with or without the cancellation coverage–so make sure to select the one that gives you the coverage that you need. Other commonly used companies include Global Rescue and World Nomads.

You are welcome to seek out other insurance options, as these are only recommendations. When selecting a policy, please make sure they insure a) the region of Antarctica, b) ski mountaineering-which involves the use of ropes, crampons, ice axes and is a guided activity. Ski mountaineering is not considered the same as skiing by many insurers, and you need to confirm that they will cover this activity.
