Nepal Upper Dolpo Traverse

Of all the places in the world, Nepal surely ranks high as one of the most magical. Indigo Alpine Guides owner, Jack Bynum has spent over 7 months exploring Nepal — there initially for the the massive mountains, but returning for the warm and big-hearted people.

We spent a lot of time asking ourselves what the most epic trek in Nepal would be — something rugged and far out there, seeing Nepal like it has been for centuries (as opposed to so many areas that have new roads or tons of tourists), something that starts high and ends high, something under 20 days. After days of pouring over maps and researching on the ground this is what we’ve come up with.

Sure, you could go do the Everest Base Camp Trek or Annapurna Circuit — but if you want to get away from the hype and see the old Nepal, on a trek across some of the most breathtaking country anywhere on earth, this might be the perfect trip for you.

But this trip won’t be for everyone! The Upper Dolpo region is really remote. In order to do the full traverse in such a short trip we’ve planned an itinerary that has us walking nearly 10 miles per day carrying light packs. We’ll have some support from porters and / or pack animals, but we’ll be carrying much of our own ultralight gear.

We strive to find that perfect blend of ruggedness and luxury — if you’re excited to travel in style, but also push yourself on long days in the mountains, reach out and let’s talk about if it’s a good fit!

In 17 days,

Visit the bustling city of Kathmandu, wander the streets, and witness the circular sunrise rotations of Buddha’s devotees around Boudhanath. Fly to Juphal, one of the high airports of Nepal and set off through high mountain valleys and over 5000 meter passes to Phoksundo Lake — made famous by peter Matthiessen’s “The Snow Leopard.” Camp on ridge lines overlooking snow-capped glaciated peaks and stay in cozy tea houses. Push yourself each day and eat a delicious meal each night proud of what you’ve accomplished. The mountains here just feel different — tall, proud, full of spiritual energy. Laugh with the Nepali people we meet along the way and your Nepali guides and porters, communicating as best you can. Be the lucky few who gets to witness Nepal as it once was, before the mass road building effort began. Celebrate the traverse at a beautiful tea house in Jomsom before flying out to Pokhara and driving back to your beautiful hotel in Kathmandu. Trips like these make life long memories and life long friends.

MOMENT BY MOMENT, DAY BY DAY

An ocean away from everything we’ll slow down the noise

but turn up the dial on spirit and wildness.

DAY 1

DAY 1

Welcome to to the sensory-overload of Kathmandu! We’ll meet you at the airport and shuttle you to one of the nicest hotels in the city. The rest of the day is yours to rest, explore the city and pick up any last needed items for the trip. In the evening we’ll meet for a delicious welcome dinner and gear check. Sleep well tonight. Tomorrow we take off.

DAY 2

DAY 2

Today you can either sleep in or wake up for Sunrise at Boudanath — one of the miraculous Buddhist Stupas in the city. When the sun is rising you can join hundreds of Nepali people walking circumambulating in devotion. Here, an incredible blend of old world and new: wall scrapers in traditional garb wearing fitbits, monks in robes, Nepali business people in suits listening to Airpods.

After a wonderful breakfast we’ll head to the airport for a short one hour flight to Nepalgunj. We’ll check into our hotel and you’ll be free to explore the bazaars and temples of Nepalgunj with or without a guide. Your on your own for dinner tonight. We’re happy to recommend our favorite spots.

DAY 3

DAY 3

Today we’ll fly amongst giant mountains to Juphal and start trekking! Flying through the Himalayas is a treat — and it gets your heart pumping a bit. This flight saves us tens of hours on bumpy jeep roads! Welcome to the journey. As we set out, the immensity of the journey starts to set in, and we remember to come back to our breath, to one step at a time as we start making miles down the trail. There’s more to see than we can possibly take in — the obviousness of hanging glaciers miles above the valley floor, the smile of a child chasing after you down the trail just to say hello and giggle, the yaks grazing the pastures. Welcome to Nepal, again.

Today we’ll depart from the well-traveled path and head East towards Bagala Pass

DAY 9
Today is our first real test! Up and over 17,000 ft Bagala Pass. Steadily we’ll make our way up and over.

At this point in the trek we’ve joined up with the famous Great Himalaya Trail — a 1200 mile trail that crosses the entirety of Nepal. Not very many people hike the trail each year, but maybe we’ll cross paths with a few intrepid through hikers.

DAY 16

DAY 16

Today we do something weird. We get in a jeep and drive bumpy roads to Jomsom. It’s a beautiful if bumpy drive down a major Nepali Valley. The road is only a few years old and is already changing the scene dramatically. But after over a dozen long days, driving feels pretty darn good.

DAY 17

DAY 17

Today we bid farewell to the big mountains and fly off to Pokhara. Here we’ll check into our hotel and have a final celebratory dinner.

DAY 18

Day 18

After a restful evening in Pokhara we load up and drive back to Kathmandu. It’s a beautiful six hour drive and good time to think back on the trip and share any last conversations with new friends before parting ways in the evening. Once in Kathmandu we’ll drop you back at your hotel and bid farewell.

Check out the FAQ’s below, or text or call us at 845-661-3008 to talk it through! Or send us an email. We love hearing from folks.

  • Fast-packing just means we’ll be carrying minimal supplies and covering bigger distances than you might on a normal backpacking expedition. We’re aiming to have packs down to 20 pounds or less and cover around 10 miles per day. Some days we may cover up to 15 miles. Some days we’ll rest or cover under 5.

  • You don’t need to be an ultra-marathoner, or even a marathoner to do this trip, but you do need to be in excellent shape.

We’ll cover anywhere from 5 to 15 miles in a day all on decent trail with light packs. That’s actually pretty reasonable over eight hours of hiking, but is a big day for most people, especially when you consider the altitude.

If you’re considering the trip, but unsure about fitness, give us a call — we’re happy to talk through it with you.

Upon booking you’ll receive training suggestions to prepare. Even if you’re not in shape for the trio now, you could be in a few months with a bit fo work.

In small towns we’ll be eating delicious and hearty home cooked Nepali food, usually Dhal Bhaat (rice and lentils) with curried vegetables and meat where available. When camping we’ll be eating lightweight backpacker meals.

    You will not go hungry!

  • Someone will be there to pick you up from the airport on Day 1. Please plan to arrive in Kathmandu before 4 pm on Day 1. We will meet in Kathmandu in the hotel restaurant for a welcome dinner at 6:30. The exact hotel and room info will be sent to you after booking. Most people will want to arrive a few days early to see the area and travel around. At minimum we recommend arriving the day prior to settle in and rest off some let lag.

Please plan all homebound flights no earlier than 7pm on day 18.

  • Our mac altitude on this trip is around 17,000 feet /5,500 meters. That’s pretty high for most people, but we don’t get there on day one, we work up to it slowly.

If you have a history of altitude sickness, let us know.

  • We have people come on our trips by themselves all the time! There’s nothing like travel through remote wilderness to build community. Our prices are based on double occupancy of rooms. If you’re traveling alone we’ll ask you to pay a one time solo travel supplement to cover the extra cost of the room. Please inquire for updated pricing.

  • Indigo Alpine Guide trips are most often run by the owner Jack Bynum and his closest and most trusted friends. All the people who work for IAG have over a decade of experience guiding trips in the most remote places on earth, have wilderness medical training and advanced guiding certifications.

In addition to your American guide, you’ll also be joined by excellent and friendly Nepali guides personally vetted by IAG’s owner.

Your American guide will speak some Nepali and your Nepali guide will speak fluent English — together they can help you navigate the language and culture.

  • You may cancel up to 120 days of the scheduled travel date and receive a full refund minus a $500 per-person service fee. If you cancel between 120 and 60 days of travel, there is a 50% cancellation fee. Within 60 days of travel, there is a 100% cancellation fee. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance as we are not able to make exceptions to this policy in cases of family/medical emergency or of the trip being canceled.

  • We always encourage folks to purchase trip cancelation insurance in addition to the mandatory medical evacuation insurance. We require that you have at least $200,000 in medical evacuation insurance. Your insurance policy should cover hazardous sports and we recommend that your policy cover search and rescue. Since we cannot confirm each client’s policy individually, it is your responsibility to make sure your policy will cover you while you participate in your activities of choice on the expedition.

For US citizens, we recommend Global Rescue. You will have a choice of purchasing it with or without the cancellation coverage–so make sure to select the one that gives you the coverage that you need. Other commonly used companies include World Nomads and Squaremouth.

You are welcome to seek out other insurance options, as these are only recommendations. When selecting a policy, please make sure they insure all the activities you’ll be participating in (many don’t include roped climbing, skiing, mountaineering, etc).
