Private Guided Backcountry Skiing

A day up at Snoqualmie Pass, an expedition into the Wrangells in winter — getting outside in the winter changes the season’s feel. Our most common day trips: tours around Snoqualmie Pass and ski mountaineering days on Baker with a possible summit for fit groups.

Once the spring comes we transition towards Cascades ski traverses.

For international trips: consider a private Antarctica trip or Japan powder skiing.

Private Seminars & Instruction

We’ve spent years teaching people how to move through the mountains. From one day skills seminars to week-long ski expedition prep, we’ve got you covered. Wherever you are in your backcountry skiing journey we can take you to the next level. As guides we’ve been honing our craft to perfection — so we’re sure to have tips and skills that make your time in the mountains safer, more fun, and more stylish.

PNW SKI TOURING

Below are some areas we regularly guide. But there’s tons of other options out there. If you’d like to book us for any of these areas, or talk about different objectives, please reach out.

Snoqualmie Pass

Snoqualmie Pass

Just a 45 minute drive from Seattle is a world of incredible ski touring.

Ski Tours
Join us for a day out of guided skiing or learning. Sweet turns, alps-like views, and a world away from Seattle. We’ll work with you to plan a perfect day suited to you.

Ski Mountaineering
The Slot and Snot Couloirs are classic technical single day objectives. The Chair Peak Circumnavigation exposes you to a massive swath of Snoqualmie backcountry in 1 long day or 2 reasonable ones.

Baker / Kulshan

Baker / Kulshan Backcountry

Koma Kulshan, also referred to just as Kulshan or Mt. Baker offers a huge playground at all aspects and a huge swath of elevations. At the center of course, is 10,786 ft Kulshan, a crowning jewel of the Cascades and home to tons of awesome ski mountaineering adventures (see below). Watching sunrise on Mt. Baker with a sea of clouds beneath me and only a few other volcanoes popping through is one of my favorite experiences to have in the Cascades. But more than just beauty, Mt. Baker has incredible record-breaking amounts of snow and tons of intermediate to advanced terrain — and while it may be a long drive from Seattle, once you’re there it’s pretty quick skinning till you feel like you’re really in the mountains surrounded by possibilities. There’s also tons of sidecountry to work with if you have a pass.

PNW SKI MOUNTAINEERING

Below are some highlights. If you’d like to explore other mountains, reach out.

Mt. Baker / Kulshan

Mt. Baker / Koma Kulshan

Easton Glacier
The mellowest route up the mountain provides an excellent ski mountaineering objective. We’ll rope up while on glacier and may need to use ski crampons and or boot crampons depending on snow conditions, but otherwise it’s a fairly beginner friendly ski mountaineering route. We run these trips either as 3 day trips or 1 day speed pushes. Must have some backcountry skiing experience and be able to ski black diamonds comfortably.

Up North Ridge, Down Coleman-Deming
If you want to up the technical ante, consider climbing the North Ridge and skiing the Coleman Deming. Yes, climbing ice with skis can be a challenge — but makes for all the more memorable fo an experience.

Must have some mountaineering and ice climbing experience and be able to ski black diamonds comfortably.

Shuksan

Shuksan

Shuksan has over 30 distinct ski lines. Generally we guide people on the White Salmon Glacier over 2 days, but for serious backcountry skiers we can talk about some other lines. Of all the peaks in the cascades, this one feels most like Alaska or the Himalaya. But due to its proximity to Baker Ski Area access is fairly easy.

PNW SKI TRAVERSES

Below are some traverses we regularly guide. But there’s tons of other options out there. If you’d like to book us for any of these areas, or talk about different objectives, please reach out.

Watson Traverse

Watson Traverse

Up and over Mt. Baker / Kulshan. Is there any cooler ski mountaineering objective in the PNW? In 4 days we’ll climb up Baker via the Coleman-Deming route, revel in a wintry summit, and then ski down the seldom travelled and wild Park Glacier Headwall. Surprisingly, this traverse is rarely done and rarely guided — which means you’ll have a real wilderness experience and ski terrain few ever do.

Must have previous ski touring experience and be a competent black diamond skier.

Enchantments Traverse

Enchantments Traverse

In the summer, backpacking the 20 mile enchantments traverse requires a permit that people wait years and years to get… only to hike the trail with tons of other people. In the winter, you need not wait for a permit, and you’ll probably only see a few people if any along the way. You’ll witness the magic of Colchuck Lake and the wild spines of Dragontail, climb to the heights of Asgard Pass and camp below the famous Prussik Peak.

We run this as a 3 day trip. But for super fit and motivated parties it can be done in 1 day.

Ptarmigan Traverse

Ptarmigan Ski Traverse

The Ptarmigan Traverse is world famous as a summer mountaineering traverse. But honestly, it’s better on skis. Seven days of remote wilderness solitude, mind-soothing sunsets, hopefully good skiing, and an endless array of summits to climb to.

INTERNATIONAL PRIVATE SKI GUIDING

Below are some highlights. If you’d like to explore other mountains, reach out.

Antarctica

Antarctica Ski & Sail

Each fall we take a few folks skiing in Antarctica. If you’d like to join a group trip, check out that trip page. If you’d like 1:1 guiding or would like to reserve all 4 spots for your party we can usually make that happen.

Japan

Japan

Japan is the Holy Grail for skiers who love to ski deep powder.  On the northern island of Hokkaido, the mountains are known for frequent snowfall, après ski means soaking in an outdoor onsen with a Sapporo Classic in hand and dinner is the freshest sushi imaginable.

If you’re ready for one of the greatest ski trips on earth, we can make it happen in style.

 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Check out the FAQ’s below, or text or call us at 845-661-3008 to talk it through! Or send us an email. We love hearing from folks.

  • It depends on the trip. At a minimum you should be able to ski blues at the resort. We don’t recommend learning how to ski in the backcountry — it can certainly be done, but it will take a long time and expose you to more risk than learning at the resort.

    • Professional Mountain Guide with over 17 years climbing experience around the world & advanced wilderness medical training.

    • All group gear climbing gear: Tents, Ropes, carabiners, first aid kit, emergency communication device.

    • All Breakfasts and Dinners in the field for overnight trips.

    • Use of our harnesses, helmets, and headlamps if you don’t have your own.

    • Airfares to or from your home city, whether on scheduled or charter flights.

    • Personal gear: clothing, backpack, skis, boots, poles.

    • Avi gear: Beacon, shovel, probe.

    • Personal snacks / lunches

    • Food and accommodations while not in the field.

    • Guide’s travel (for climbs outside the PNW).

    • Tips for guides.

  • We guide routes from basic snow climbs all the way up to full alpine complexity every-trick-you-have-in-the-bag-you-need. For simple objectives we can usually guide at a 1:4 or 1:3 ratio. For routes that involve vertical climbing, we’ll most often be at 2:1 or 1:1 ratios. This ensures an adequate margin of safety and fluidity of movement.

If the ski day you’ve chosen requires a 2:1 ratio but you’re a party of 3, no worries, we’ll just add another guide to the trip!

  • We’ve been teaching backcountry skiing and avalanche awareness for over a decade. Anything you want to learn we can help you get there! Even if you consider yourself an expert skiier, we can likely teach you a bunch of useful tools to smooth out your systems.

  • Multi-day trips will either require camping (all the ski traverses) or staying in an Airbnb or hotel (Japan, Antarctica). We can help you arrange accommodation if you’d like.

For some trips, you may lodge with your guide, for others you can choose to lodge separately.

  • We have people come on our trips by themselves all the time! There’s nothing like travel through remote wilderness to build community. Our prices are based on double occupancy of rooms. if you’re traveling alone we’ll ask you to pay a one time solo - travel supplement to cover the extra cost of the room. Please inquire for updated pricing.

  • Indigo Alpine Guide trips are most often run by the owner Jack Bynum and his closest and most trusted friends. All the people who work for IAG have over a decade of experience guiding trips in the most remote places on earth, have wilderness medical training and advanced guiding certifications.

  • For Day Trips:

If you cancel for any reason prior to 30 days before the course start, you may rebook a later date for 100% credit, subject to availability, or receive a refund. If you cancel between 7 and 30 days prior to the course start, you may reschedule subject to availability. Between 7 and 30 days there are no refunds. If you cancel inside of 7 days from the course start, there are no reschedules or refunds available. This includes, but is not limited to:

    – Injury/illness (positive cover exposure excepted)

    – Weather, mountain and travel conditions (please see #4 below)

    – Personal scheduling changes

    For Multi-day Trips:

You may cancel up to 120 days of the scheduled travel date and receive a full refund minus a $500 per-person service fee. If you cancel between 120 and 60 days of travel, there is a 50% cancellation fee. Within 60 days of travel, there is a 100% cancellation fee. We highly recommend purchasing travel insurance as we are not able to make exceptions to this policy in cases of family/medical emergency or of the trip being canceled.

  • We always encourage folks to purchase trip cancelation insurance in addition to the mandatory medical evacuation insurance. We require that you have at least $200,000 in medical evacuation insurance. Your insurance policy should cover hazardous sports and we recommend that your policy cover search and rescue. Since we cannot confirm each client’s policy individually, it is your responsibility to make sure your policy will cover you while you participate in your activities of choice on the expedition.

For US citizens, we recommend Global Rescue. You will have a choice of purchasing it with or without the cancellation coverage–so make sure to select the one that gives you the coverage that you need. Other commonly used companies include World Nomads and Squaremouth.

You are welcome to seek out other insurance options, as these are only recommendations. When selecting a policy, please make sure they insure all the activities you’ll be participating in (many don’t include roped climbing, skiing, mountaineering, etc).
